Most contest organizers require a high entry fee, and they reject books with low rating and only a few reviews. In our opinion, most Indie authors, no matter how great their books are, can't afford effective marketing. Therefore, their books are not found by readers and a lot of amazing stories remain unknown.
There are Award Contest that promise publishing deals to the winners. These are mostly scams, only a few big publisher conducts this kind of contest and they require unpublished books to enter.
There are those contests that require high entry fee and they offer cash prizes but in the fine print they states that the prize depends on the number of books entered.
Then, unfortunately, there are those contest that pay bestseller authors to put their names on the judges' list but the authors don't read and judge the books, only supply their names as a catch.
In our contests the judges are volunteer teachers, authors, and avid readers. Because they have social site profiles and belong to reading clubs, they wish to remain anonymous to avoid soliciting messages by authors asking for favors.
The judges rate the contest books on the scale of 0-10 by answering the questions below.
Is the story age appropriate?
Is the story line engaging and interesting enough to make a child turn the pages?
Is the protagonist's character well developed? (can a child relate to it?)
Is the antagonist character well developed? (does it trigger emotional respons from a child?)
Is the author's writing style engaging and makes the story flow well?
Does the story carry a valuable moral message to children without sounding preachy?
Do children learn moral values shown by the characters instead of told by the author?
Is the formatting and or illustrations aesthetically pleasing?
Did you find the story idea original?
Satisfying ending (happy ending or not, does it leave children satisfied with the conclusion of the story?)
