Age group references:
Pre-readers:
6 months to 6 years, when parents read to the child:
During the initial phase of the reading development process children sample and learn from a full range of multiple sounds, words, concepts, images, and picture books with simple stories.
Early readers:
7-9 year old children are learning the relationships between letters and sounds and amongst printed and spoken words. Early reader books have a balance with the use of repetitive language coupled with art, context clues, and a significant amount of sight words mixed with new words. They also have a limited number of characters per line and are large enough for the child to read it easily.
Fluent readers:
For 9-15 year old children. Reading is used to acquire new ideas to gain new knowledge, to experience new feelings, to acquire new attitudes, and to explore issues from multiple perspectives.

A read to story for children 4-6 and read alone for ages 7-10
Lucky, the sweet-natured little monkey was bullied by the animals who didn't take time to get to know her. They said she was a dumpy, chunky, silly, scaredy, grumpy, clumsy monkey. Lucky was sad but instead of feeling miserable, she chose to listen to her friend who knew her and said that Lucky was a lovely, cuddly, bubbly, spunky monkey.” |
Story analysis of The Chunky, Dumpy, Spunky Monkey by Lorraine Carey, literary specialist
Overall opinion:
The story hits all the major points that make this book valuable for young readers. The story flows well as it builds to the plot and ends with a satisfying conclusion.
It draws on the emotions of readers such as sadness and empathy as a young monkey losing her mother and is teased for being chubby. It makes her sad, but eventually, the animals who tease her will be the very ones to help her discover the key to being happy and to learn to love herself. There is a great moral to the story, being able to gain strength during rough times and try to turn negative feelings into positive ones. Children learn that with goodness in their hearts and a positive outlook, they can change any bad situation into a good one.
- The book is aesthetically pleasing and the perfect print size for the age group.
- The illustrations support the story very well, the characters display appropriate emotions, and children could imagine the story even without reading the text.
- Each illustration page has a focal point as well as a lot of details relating to the story to discover. The book features pages in comic-style format, which is desirable for children with added speech bubbles making it easy to discern which character is speaking.
- Children are provided with plenty of details in the illustrations that they can discover when they take a closer look.
- The introduction of sadness and fear when the little monkey loses her mother due to a cruel act, provokes the emotions of sadness and empathy as well as planting a thought in the minds of children to fight against cruelty when they grow up. The feelings of friendship, happiness, and the satisfaction of helping others, are also emphasized in the story, flipping the balance toward to a positive state of mind.
- The words used in the story and the length of sentences are age appropriate throughout the book.
- The flow of the story is seamless, there is something on every page that keeps the child’s interest to continue reading.
- The storyline is clear and easy to follow.
- The conclusion of the story is great with positive moral values.
