Magical realismOliver recommends this book because...Editorial review "If you enjoy stories with alternate realities or parallel universes, you've likely enjoyed a tale or two by the author, Maighread MacKay. "Finding Charli" is such a tale, although I hesitate to minimize the novel by the confines of a single genre. Elements of high fantasy, romance and magical realism are interwoven seamlessly with thought-provoking feel-good philosophy. The main character, Charli, is a young woman who's lost her way after the death of her supportive grandmother. This loss, the condescending men in her life and some deep-seated resentments from her youth combine to trap her in a very dark place. She is unsure of who she is, the direction she wants for her life and even her own worth. After an argument with her boyfriend over the immediate need for marriage (his need), she drives towards home in a blizzard- only to wreck her vehicle on the icy roads. The accident is the trigger for her "out-of-world" experience. With her vehicle out of commission, Charli sets off on foot. Spying a distant light, she moves towards what she assumes to be home. What she discovers is a mystical inn with... But wait...no further spoilers here. I don't want to ruin the surprise. (Suffice it to say I'm actively searching to make reservations there). The author deftly conveys the character's disbelief (and ultimate belief) along with the precise setting descriptions in a manner that I soon felt I was right there at the Inn with Charli. Her experiences, along with the colorful characters she meets, lead to dramatic changes in her life and relationships. I highly recommend this as a must read, and an important one. It's a feel-good emotional roller coaster, and a thought provoking read you won't soon forget If you haven't read this author before, you're missing out on a real treasure. Well done." The pacing of the story was excellent, and the building frustration with Toby the mouse will definitely keep readers engaged. They will also like the build-up as Emma is drawing, each page turn will keep them wondering what will happen next.” ~Millie Godwin “This was such a fun little story, full of both magic and wisdom! The moral to be careful what you wish for worked ever so perfectly and is a timeless one. Also, it was done in a unique way—not just because of the enchanted pencil, but because the main character is usually the one who needs to learn the lesson. Here, Emma is the one teaching the lesson to Toby, the demanding mouse." ~Emma Lawson Send a book to OliverThe word today is WHIMPEROliver recommends this book because..."A seamless collaboration between two authors has resulted in a serial killer thriller whose unsolved crimes are rooted in time. The reader rides on the coattails of Ava Castlebury’s kidnapping. Cleverly interwoven backstories reveal the main characters’ backgrounds and their circumstances. This nail-biting, page-turner has a few surprises up its sleeve in rooting out the perpetrators of evil. Not everyone is what they seem. I highly recommend this sinisterly plotted novel where evil will out." The conversation with Sophia and her aunt, her aunt with that rolling pin was hysterical. Growing up in Queens, NY I could totally relate. I enjoyed how you really get two stories in one. You begin with Jayden and Sophia but once they start to translate the book Jayden finds – not where you think, you’re in a whole other world. More and more information comes to light as Sophia begins to remember some traumatic events from their childhood. Events take some crazy, but really interesting turns and I found myself turning page after page to find out the next piece and I was never disappointed." ~Dorothy Angel Send a book to OliverSupernatural thrillerOliver recommends this book because..."Wow! Where do I begin? If possible, Blood Hunters is even more riveting than its predecessor, Magician’s Mayhem. Each time my daily chores call me away from this book, I need a few moments to gather my thoughts to connect with real life again. This story literally transports you to another world. Slate Raven displays his extraordinary talent as he weaves layer upon layer of intrigue and mystery around a powerful yet threatened love story. Of course, who wouldn’t root for Bane? He’s the ultimate hero, the ultimate man…shouldering the weight of right over wrong…and good over evil. As he battles the underworld, you wonder if he’ll survive with so much stacked against him. After all, I thought him dead once in Magician’s Mayhem…thankfully I was wrong! Follow Bane into the mystical world of the paranormal and taste a haunted existence. Like Magician’s Mayhem, Blood Hunters is a must-read!! Well done, Slate!" ~M Minette Send a book to OliverPoetry from the heartOliver recommends this book because..."Cindy J. Smith has a way with words. In the collection of Amazing poems, I was captivated by every poetry written, some with a message of emotions. Take a deep breath and find your favorite. You will shed tears of the kindness of the author's words by her heart and soul. The dark poems of understanding and the smiles of lovely comments and particular words are compelling with the hope of faith. I enjoyed every page. I highly recommend the book; many of the poems you will relate to, and in the end, they will touch your heart." ~Martha Perez Send a book to OliverThe word today is SHADOWOliver recommends this book because..."I read this book during a night when sleep was not coming to release my daily stress. I grabbed my kindle and chose this book from the long TBR list. Boy, I was glad about my insomnia because the story I was reading was intriguing, well written and a real page-turner. It's not easy to have well-developed characters, an intriguing story, and enough twists in such a short read. The author did a great job, squeezing all the necessary elements in a novella, and for this reason, I wholeheartedly recommend this book. You won't be disappointed, believe me!" ~Keskiviikko73 Send a book to OliverContemporary Women's FictionRecommended because..."Etta’s fishing ground has more to offer than the random smallmouth bass. It has a gallery of vivid characters and gives the reader a many-faceted insight into the fifties and the seventies without ever moving away from Foster, Rhode Island. It is nothing new that love can derail the best laid plans. Neither is it surprising that false impressions can derail the closest relationships. Ms Pasco manages to give an age-old story new twists and make the life and love of ordinary people extraordinary. That alone is enough to blaze a trail and immerse any reader in a human drama of depth and psychological insight. Add to that Ms Pasco’s crisp and inventive prose and you have a whirlwind of a book that keeps surprising and enchanting the reader." ~HM Holten Send a book to OliverThe word today is RESENTMENTOliver recommends this book because..."A fascinating story that mixes ancient and modern times. Inadvertently, Layla awakens the ghost of Prince Akhmose, whom only she can see. She will help him fight against a curse that struck him centuries ago in ancient Egypt. But a form of attraction will develop between these two characters that everything opposes. This book is really interesting to escape in your ancient times. The writing is lively and makes you want to stay as long as possible with these endearing characters. A charming book." ~Andy Send a book to Oliver |
