Occult horrorOliver recommends this book because..."Author Alan Zacher puts his best detective, James Hurts—a familiar protagonist to his fans—on the case when Emily’s friend, Amanda, learns about the teen vampires’ gruesome plan and convinces him to launch a rescue. What ensues is a raucous and rowdy, albeit dark and dangerous mission to save Emily from certain death. The telling of this modern story comes off like an old crime novel from the Spillane era with supernatural undertones and a passel of vampires added in for good measure. Zacher’s no-nonsense writing style flows naturally, with each sentence punctuating the one before in a bullet format, leading the reader directly into the nitty, gritty world of his grumpy, worn-out detective with the heart of gold." ~Jeannie Richards Send a book to Oliver

The Word Today is WITHEREDOliver recommends this book because..."I was very pleased to come across this Fantasy novel because it is much more aligned to my taste in such books, namely real people living in our world, but gifted with special ‘magical’ powers. The first sentences already grabbed my fascination, and the easy flow of the entire book continually held my interest and curiosity. The author has skillfully let the main characters talk in the form of diary entries, and with natural dialogue and careful descriptions of thoughts and feelings, the reader soon feels intimately acquainted with them. Particularly interesting is the fact that many aspects of this story are based on fact and history, namely the Huns who lived in Eastern Europe some 1500 years ago. It is therefore not too hard to believe that ancient traditions and secret rites could have continued down to our time. The main character, Ilona, is a young doctor educated in the modern world who at first struggles to comprehend the depth and power of her heritage when she ‘becomes of age’ at 29. Fascinating and fun to read is the way she discovers her special healing abilities and in particular, the way she can slow time around her. Even more intriguing is her handsome love interest, Zoltan, who can time-travel, but always within limitations and ancient law." ~Barbara Underwood Send a book to OliverRecommended because..."Broken Pieces is an exploration of resilience and choices. The story details the struggles of sisters Abby and Megan, told from the point of view of Abby. The reader is quickly moved from the notion of an ordinary novel to the thought of having discovered a young girl’s diary and having the audacity to read it. Abby endures multiple living situations that threaten stability, and in one instance – her life. Not being able to depend on an alcoholic father, she carefully negotiates minefields of cruelty from a mentally deranged stepmother, heartless relatives, and school bullies. As her words describe abuse, loneliness, and bitter loss, you can’t turn away. The raw emotion delivered by a talented author engages the reader. You are motivated to reach out to Abby – you want to protect her, advise her, and lend a comforting shoulder to cry on. Through the years, Abby articulates encounters with friends and lovers – both life-enhancing and gut-punch painful. Life lessons are used to raise two boys and begin a business. As her days turn into a normal routine, Abby is confronted with a difficult choice. The excruciating decision will affect people she loves. Will she follow her intellect or her heart? We applaud Abby’s resiliency while knowing, in reality, not all people in similar situations are as fortunate. Hopefully, through Abby’s ability to cope, other broken hearts will find enough hope to persevere." ~Alan Vandervoort Send a book to OliverSci-fi space operaRecommended because..."Unusual POV which I got quickly used to. It had strong female protagonists. For those of a sensitive nature it included a rape scene. But it contained exceptional well thought out world building and I loved the animal contacts and visits to the different worlds. It was full of swashbuckling action that I particularly enjoyed. I loved Captain James Black, Kathy, Cindy, and Lien, all of the characters really, I thought the structure of their roles well written. The story moved along very smoothly. I totally enjoyed the engrossing action Sci-Fi story. Very entertaining enjoyable book. I would read another book by R. A. “Doc” Correa." Send a book to Oliver |
