What is phobia?A phobia is a type of anxiety disorder defined by a persistent and excessive fear of an object or situation. Phobias typically, result in a rapid onset of fear and are present for more than six months. ~Wikipedia Many phobias develop as a result of having a negative experience or panic attack related to a specific object or situation. Genetics and environment. There may be a link between your own specific phobia and the phobia or anxiety of your parents — this could be due to genetics or learned behavior. I created some videos for you, enjoy! Nyctophobia is fear of night or darknessI have a healthy fear of darkness, just like most people. I'm fortunate that it didn't escalate to phobia when as a child, I imagined monsters in every closet and under the bed. Just like most kids, I quickly outgrew the fear of darkness. Social phobiaAlthough I don't like posting selfies or self-videos, luckily, I don't have this problem. Automatonophobia is fear of human-like figuresWell, with this, I do have a problem. I keep double social distance when I see dummies in stores. As a nurse, I struggled with this phobia every year when I had to take CPR refreshment courses. I was fortunate that the instructors saw me many times giving CPR to real people during codes, so they let me wear gloves and cover the creepy, plastic dummies with a bedsheet so I don't have to see or touch them. Cynophobia is fear of dogsI would feel devastated if I had this phobia, and my heart goes out to people who do. I couldn't imagine my life without having and hugging a furry friend. Equinophobia is fear of horsesI'm so lucky not to be one of the 8% population who has irrational fear of horses. I love these majestic, intelligent animals. Trypanophobia is fear of needlesNow that would be bizarre if a nurse had this phobia. However, even though I don't have a problem with needles, I prefer not to have tattoos. Have you any phobia? I am petrified of heights, I have panic attacks just standing on a chair in my kitchen to get something out of my cabinets.

I am not afraid of needles, I just pass out if they are going in me and I see them first, lol

Yikes! I've come across many patients who passed out having an injection. But most of them, aware of their fear of the sight of needles, didn't have a problem when they looked away or closed their eyes.

I can relate to that! Not as much as standing on a chair, but I wouldn't walk the roof like my hubby does. Fear of heights will be explained in the second part of this series.

I don't like needles going in me at all. I remember having to have a day surgery when Jasmine was 3. I was in tears when I heard the cart coming to start my IV and she was patting my had telling me it would be ok. 7/22/2021 06:27:59 pm
Some of the less common phobias could be a good source for an original story. Phobias such as Somniphobia - fear of sleeping or Panphobia - fear of everything.

Yes, most phobias could be given to certain characters in stories. Makes the characters more interesting and more relatable

We had a client at my old job who was terrified of trees. Pretty much everywhere round here has at least some trees, so that must have been difficult

I think a lot of people were traumatized by clowns when they were very young. I'm not sure if I have a phobia, but I hate clowns, regardless.

I think all sane people are terrified of clowns. :) I love heights, but not necessarily jumping from them! I don't like tight spaces. I didn't realize lots of people are scared of horses. One of my daughter's friends got a horse, and so the kids all had a "Horse Warming" party, but most of the kids were very scared of the horse. I didn't realize!

What a fascinating topic. I don't think I have any sort of real phobia, as I might get uncomfortable of one or other situation or things depending on the day and the state of mind. I am not afraid of needles, but I prefer not to peek when I get blood sample. Depending on the situations I might get scared of high places, but I might walk on a canopy bridge without even thinking about the height.

I included a charcter with a fear of fish, Ichthyophobia, in my latest novel. I myself have a terrible fear of rodents. I shuddered typing the word.

Perhaps when it comes to fish and rodents it's more disgust than fear. I have no problem looking at fish, but if I'd have to touch one, I don't think I could do it.
