Aileen's Guesthouse

"Eva's writing style is one-of-a-kind and captivating. The way she effortlessly integrates the scenes, action, and characters keeps the reader fully engaged in the story. There is never a dull moment or a chance for the mind to wander away from the narrative." ~ Author Erika M Szabo

(Charlestown, Rhode Island) - Overlooking Horseshoe Point at the end of Sea Lea Avenue in the picturesque village of Quonochontaug, you’ll find Aileen’s Guesthouse. There, a smattering of Quonnie’s locals and lodgers cross paths.  Whether through cultivated connection or random encounter, these folks have more in common than first meets the eye.

An incoming tide strews debris of self-recrimination, regret, and remorse for their unintentional culpability in jeopardizing the life of an immediate family member. Whether altering destiny, attributing to demise, or precipitating a debilitating accident—no one is exempt from heartache:

Aileen Stanton – for getting sidetracked on her watch
Gertrude Stanton – for her preoccupation
Ox (James) Babcock – for loaning a ten-dollar bill
Grande dame, Lillian Wright – for engaging in an illicit affair during the Roaring Twenties
Birdman, Drake Lynch – for wielding his power of persuasion
Career mom, Perla Moreno – for her momentary lapse in judgment

The guesthouse provides a home away from home. For some, a refuge for healing. For others, a retreat for cultivating hopes and dreams. For the invited reader of adult fiction, a portal for stepping into the 1970s in close proximity to those who survive the ravages of a guilt-wracked conscience and struggle to find meaning in the suffering they’ve caused.
Welcome to Aileen’s Guesthouse. Dinner is served at six o'clock sharp.

Choosing a Book

Picture
While it's often said not to judge a book by its cover when it comes to making friends, the design of a book's cover matters greatly. In fact, a study conducted by Thriftbooks revealed that 57% of Americans make their book choices based on the cover design.

This shows that cover designs play a crucial role in our reading preferences. Surprisingly, out of those who chose a book solely based on its cover, 96% found that the content largely met their expectations.

However, 80% also admitted to avoiding a book because of its outward appearance. The respondents mentioned various factors contributing to these preconceived notions:
Plain-looking covers (61%)
Unlikable title fonts (56%)
Art that doesn’t match the genre (52%)
Using the movie poster from the book’s film adaptation (49%)

When it comes to creating compelling book covers, people appreciate:
Detailed illustrations (53%)
Images of the story’s setting (53%)
A compelling color palette (50%)
An image of the protagonist (47%)

It's quite intriguing that even with the impact of bestseller lists and social media hype on book selections, the cover of a book still holds considerable weight.
So, if you happen to judge a book by its cover, know that you're not alone!

Take a look at the BOOK COVER DESIGNS we created for authors.

Hugs-Love and Great Karma

Hugs, love and great Karma
I am sending to you
With prayers and best wishes
(And some fairy-dust too)

Provide you some comfort
When your life gets too rough
Woes have you believing
You have had quite enough

Help renew your lost hope
When your goals seem too far
Remind you of your strength
So you'll reach for that star

Touch your heart when you're sad
Or traveling grief's road
Perhaps bring you a smile
When you're lost and alone
Sometimes you just need
A different point of view
To change all those nightmares
Into dreams coming true

Life's storms can be scary
Filled with sorrow and pain
But there's never rainbows
Without a little rain

Your life is worth living
And true love can be found
Beauty is everywhere
If you would look around

Like petals on the right daisy
You'll find I love you a lot
I'll show you the magic
It seems you forgot

Raised by a single, hardworking mother, Jerri, and her sister grew up in a neighborhood where drugs, sex, violence, and the sound of helicopters looking for suspects were a part of their daily lives.
She became pregnant at fourteen, expelled from public school, she struggled to keep her head above water and did the best she could to raise her child. Not knowing her own worth and unaware of the fact that life could be different, she believed her life was normal, just like the lives of everyone she knew. Until an encounter at age sixteen made her realize that God had predestined her for so much more. She realized that every bad experience of her young life had a purpose, God had been testing her strength and faith.
In this short book, Jerri shares the events of her life when she’d been tested and tells you about the power of having faith and standing strong even in the darkest times when there is little hope left to hold onto.

Do you know someone with disabilities?  Basic life skills, such as getting dressed or brushing teeth can be difficult for them to do.  Some people may appear a little different on the surface, but isn’t what’s on the inside that counts?

Jared’s twin brother has special limitations.  Tim can barely stand and has not yet learned basic speech.  He uses a wheelchair, lacking the ability to move himself.
Despite being born with Cerebral Palsy, Tim battles mental and physical impairments, while he strives to live a normal life.  Whether it’s exercising weak muscles, trying to learn sign language, or merely playing with his twin, brother Jared, Tim always tries to fit in.

Best Buddies for Life is a valuable, social awareness tool.  The story depicts a realistic bond of family love, tolerance and acceptance that influences a child struggling through multiple handicaps.  It also portrays the hurtful actions of others who don’t understand his disabilities. The story is told through the devoted eyes of the healthy, seven-year-old, brother.  The story captures the solid foundation which supports a child living with multiple impairments, and the results of a nurturing lifestyle.

Having a family member who has disabling disabilities could be a challenge for some, but spending a day with these two brothers, will make medical conditions such as Tim’s easier to understand.

“Fatherhood Fight or Flight is a riveting, impactful, thought-provoking read for all who would consider fatherhood. Dr. Michael Willet is an educator, trainer, and spiritual motivator, who passionately shares his wisdom to encourage fathers to put forth the effort to reinforce family values. If you desire to make a difference or know someone with the potential to benefit from fatherly advice, share this manual.”
—Bishop Eric P. Brown
Senior Pastor, Victory Faith Cathedral, Inc.
Vice-Presiding Bishop, Victory Deliverance Fellowship of Churches

“Dr. Michael Willett is a man full of wisdom, and he is always eager to share it with others. He knows what it is to turn tragedy into an opportunity for service.”
—Prof. Christopher Muhammad

“Our young males need proper training to become men and, ultimately, become effective fathers. Fatherhood Fight or Flight is the tool that can assure that growth process.”
—Jerald LeVon Hoover
Adjunct Prof. and Award-winning Author of My Friend, My Hero

“Dr. Michael Willett's example as a mentor, leader, martial artist, and a man of God has inspired me. I have read Man by Choice, Male by Birth and am blessed to be a father of children and surrogate father to many in the community. The truth, experience, and knowledge that I received in his first publication kept me rooted in my responsibilities as the father of my children, first and foremost. I have since grown to become a father-figure (Sensei Hunt Karate Instructor) to many in the community of Laurelton, New York. If you are looking to guide and direct the next generation of young people, I strongly recommend this book. It will be the priceless investment for your family library.”
—Jeff Hunt, Sensei
Laurelton, New York.

“Dr. Michael Willett's first book Man by Choice, Male by Birth, was a knockout. Understanding this, as I do, the wisdom his second book, Fatherhood Fight or Flight, should be equally as explosive.”

“Fatherhood Fight or Flight is an excellent tool for the countless black men that are seeking guidance on their fatherhood journey.”
—Shontai Hollingsworth-Miller

“This book has all the makings of a bestseller. Get it now!”
—Dr. Joe Jones

“We live in dangerous times because men have made children but have neglected to father them. We see our youth decimated in our community through gang violence and drug abuse. I believe with all my heart that we, as men, must find a way to engage our young men with real and positive alternatives to the false narrative that the OGs are feeding them. We have enough intellect, but the question is: do we have the will? I thank Dr. Willett for his endeavor to impact men with this clarion call.”

Eartha Watts Hicks

5.0 out of 5 stars A TIMELESS STORY OF BROTHERHOOD IN THE INNER-CITY
Reviewed in the United States on November 7, 2018Verified Purchase
My Friend, My Hero is a much-needed tale of friendship, brotherhood, other relationship dynamics, and positive influence. Black culture chides that 'it takes a village to raise a child.' Somehow, there so few stories of the results of being nurtured by village, when and how that child emerges, and how often that child returns, gives back and uplifts the community. The focus on sports superstars is most often on their talent, ability, wealth, and bling—rarely the struggle, sacrifices, personal responsibilities, commitment to excellence, drive, and restraint. And how often are these precious stories in books written about young black boys? Those within the nucleus of youth sports know the support system that needs to be in place to shape individual players into a team and drive that team to victory. My Friend, My Hero beautifully captures that dynamic with edge-of-the-seat intrigue, as the dangers Bennett faced, pop up one after the other. This is an excellent coming of age story for kids of any age, reminding us that some of our heroes are right at home.

5.0 out of 5 stars A rollercoaster ride of joy and sorrow
Reviewed in the United States on July 5, 2020Verified Purchase
This book is an eye opening on the current issues that young people particularly from low income families face almost everyday. Many try hard to escape the roads of drugs, gang etc..., but soon succumb to the pressure of a system structured against them. Bennett was a hero but also a martyr. This book is a great read about love, friendship, loyalty, resilience and self esteem. I highly recommend it.

“The message is clear, as it delivers its lessons on living and inspires young people to truly live according to their beliefs, stand firmly on their own ground, and not merely be a follower in the crowd.”
Mentor Magazine

“A very courageous account of what it means to be a young person today. Hoover focuses on the importance of relationships, staying in school, fair play, and setting positive goals. This is truly a story of self-respect and friendship, woven with intelligence and maturity.”
William C. Pratella, PhD
Former Superintendent of Schools, Mount Vernon, NY

“My Friend, My Hero is worth anyone’s investment in the reading arena. It speaks not only to young hearts, but to all hearts, all ages, and all stages.”
Rev. Dr. Cecil L. “Chip” Murray
F.A.M.E Church, Los Angeles, CA

“There’s a little comedy, a little drama, a little suspense, and a little mystery, with the end result being a story that’s not only entertaining, but enlightening. My Friend, My Hero is a wonderful first novel.”
Blackboard African-American Bestsellers, Inc.

“Congratulations on your remarkable book. It reaches into the soul, and it’s something that every young person should read. This book shows your remarkable ability as a writer. In my opinion, you deserve the Pulitzer Prize.”

“This is a candid story of life and death. My Friend, My Hero could be a fine tool for analytical problem-solving dialog in any contemporary classroom.”

It always makes me happy when I help authors to fulfill their dreams of publishing their first book. Anthony's story is very special, an honest biography of a teenager who made bad choices and paid for his mistakes.
Erika M Szabo,
Owner of Golden Box Books Publishing

About the book

He was nine years old when he first stood before a judge; he was told if he ever entered a courtroom again, he would receive a harsher sentence---he was back the following year. At ten years old, he coped out and served four years in an Upstate juvenile detention center. Once home, he chose to enter the only life he knew. His father and uncles fell ill, he was left to protect his godfather, assuming the title given to him by court papers, he became the enforcer for the family. Jealously and envy by an outsider, he was a fugitive of the law. Coming back to see his girl, at an address only few people knew, he was caught, put on trial, and sentenced to twenty-five years to Life. This is the story of Anthony Green.

He was imprisoned for the sins of three men. For more than two-decades the story of one of the biggest murders in Brooklyn was locked away twenty-seven plus years in an Upstate prison. Released on September 9th, six-years ago from Shawangunk Correctional Facility, the paperwork of Anthony Green tells the story.

The author replied to her, and after she did a little investigation and found out that the reader had downloaded a 'free" PDF document from a pirate site.
"Sorry you had a bad experience, but this site where you downloaded the "free" book is called a pirate site. They steal the books, and in this case, the owner of the site is not even smart enough to properly steal the entire book, they just took screenshots of the free pages that are available on legit selling sites. Had you purchase the book from a legitimate selling site such as Amazon, you'd have received a beautifully formatted eBook to enjoy. Also, I advice you to run a virus check on your tablet. The "free" books from pirate sites and not so "free".

It's always best to purchase the books from legitimate publishing sites. The ruthless pirate sites offer free books with a dark purpose. Either to scam you into signing up and as soon as you enter your credit card info you open an avalanche of fraudulent charges, or they attach a nasty spyware to the "free" book and steal your personal information off your computer.

If you'd like to read eBooks for free, ask your local library to purchase the book, and then you can read it with your library access.

Custom-made eBook and print cover design involves reading the synopsis and consulting with the author as well as searching for the perfect photos to create a cover that gives the reader an idea of the book’s content.

We'll create a cover by combining multiple layers, and unique title fonts.

You give us your own photo or purchase commercial use photos, or we'll use our commercial use photos.

We'll work with you and design your cover. Two revisions are included but we'll do revisions and changes as many times as you need to be 100% satisfied for $10 extra charge for each additional revision.

After you pay the fee, we will contact you via email within two days.
